The Highway Town Improvement Plan to Boost Zanzibar's Image and Citizens' EconomyZANZIBARThe Director General of the Zanzibar Housing Corporation, Mr. Sultan Said Suleiman, stated that the town improvement plan for areas along major highways aims to enhance the visual appeal of Zanzibar's towns, provide citizens with better housing, and stimulate economic growth through the construction of modern residential and commercial properties.Speaking while presenting the plan to the Minister of Lands and Housing Development, Hon. Rahma Kassim Ali, at the Ministry's offices in Maisara, Zanzibar, Mr. Sultan noted that many areas bordering major highways currently suffer from unplanned, informal construction that ignores urban planning. This situation diminishes the aesthetic appeal of the towns, despite the government's heavy investments in upgrading road infrastructure.He explained that the Housing Corporation is prepared to implement the plan in line with the directives of the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, to ensure more areas undergo modern development befitting Zanzibar's status.Mr. Sultan emphasized that the implementation of the plan will safeguard the interests of all affected citizens. Every homeowner or shop owner will receive compensation through a "house-for-house" and "shop-for-shop" arrangement within the same area. This measure aims to protect their livelihoods while achieving the government's goal of improving the landscape along all major highways.Furthermore, he stated that the project will utilize modern construction technologies to ensure rapid completion. It is expected to boost economic opportunities for citizens through modern residential and commercial buildings that will elevate property values and increase local economic activity.On her part, the Minister of Lands and Housing Development, Hon. Rahma Kassim Ali, commended the Housing Corporation for drafting the plan, stating that it serves the broader national interest by improving urban areas and elevating citizens' welfare.Hon. Rahma stressed the importance of continuous public education regarding the goals and benefits of the plan. She also emphasized ensuring that citizens receive the necessary cooperation and support throughout all implementation stages to ease their transition and build a shared understanding.She noted that major developmental changes often come with temporary challenges, but their ultimate outcomes bring significant benefits to society. Drawing an analogy to a child teething, she remarked that initial challenges should not block developments aimed at bringing prosperity to the citizens and the nation as a whole.
